Creating a cozy reading corner sounded like a dreamy Pinterest idea—until I realized my ADHD brain would only use it if it was set up just right. The truth is, ADHDers are a little extra when it comes to our environments. If a space doesn’t feel right, it’s basically invisible to us. So, after a lot of trial and error (and a few…. or many….. impulsive purchases), I finally figured out how to design a reading nook that’s functional, calming, and distraction-friendly.

If you’ve ever thought about setting up a reading space but weren’t sure where to start, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into how to create a reading corner you’ll love—and actually use!

Step 1: Choose Your Spot
First things first: find a location where you’re most likely to settle down and read. For me, it was a small corner in my living room that gets just enough light during the day and feels cozy at night.
Tips for choosing the right spot:
- Pick a low-traffic area (so you’re not constantly distracted by people walking by).
- Aim for a place with natural light if possible—it’s energizing and helps you stay focused.
- Make sure there’s enough space for your essentials: chair, side table, and maybe a blanket or two.

Step 2: Get a Comfy Chair (Your Throne!)
The chair is the MVP of your reading corner. You want something that’s cozy but also supportive because let’s be real—bad posture makes it hard to concentrate.
My recommendations:
- MAXYOYO Sherpa Accent Chair: Lightweight and comfortable. Bonus: it’s affordable!
- Sling Accent Chair : Stylish and sturdy, with just the right amount of padding. Also features an overarm bag to keep yor book!
- Bean Bag Chair (for the squishy lovers): If you’re someone who loves to sink into a seat, a bean bag might be your ADHD happy place.

Step 3: Lighting That Works for Your ADHD Brain
Good lighting is key. Too bright, and it’s overstimulating. Too dim, and you’ll start scrolling on your phone instead of reading.
Lighting ideas:
- Philips Hue Smart Light Bulbs: Change the color and brightness to suit your mood. I like a soft, warm glow for evening reading.
- OttLite Wellness Lamp: Reduces glare and helps with eye strain—great for marathon reading sessions.
- Clip-On Book Light: Perfect if you’re sharing the space and don’t want to light up the whole room (just make sure you have somewhere for this to live when you’re not reading. They’re small enough to be invisible to an ADHD eye).
Step 4: Create a Sensory-Friendly Environment
ADHD brains are very affected by sensory input, so make your space as calming as possible.
Add these to your reading corner:
- Weighted Blanket: Perfect for grounding yourself and reducing restlessness. I love the YnM Weighted Blanket—it’s soft, breathable, and comes in cute colors.
- Noise-Canceling Headphones: If you’re easily distracted by sounds, invest in something like the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. You can even play white noise or soft music while you read.
- Essential Oil Diffuser: Lavender and eucalyptus scents are my go-to for creating a relaxing vibe.

Step 5: Organize Your Books (Without Overwhelming Yourself)
I used to pile books everywhere, which quickly became overwhelming. Now, I keep my reading corner organized with a small bookshelf and a rule: only the books I’m actively reading or planning to read this month are allowed in the space.
Product recommendations:
- Small Ladder Shelf: Compact and stylish, it fits perfectly in a corner.
- Book Basket: If you’re not a shelf person, a cute basket works too.
- Kindle: For digital readers, keep your device handy but out of sight when not in use (less temptation to scroll!). I recommend the Kindle paperwhite for the best reading experience, but the Kindle app (and other e-reading apps) are available on most tablets.

Step 6: Add Fun and Functional Accessories
Little details make a big difference. Here are some extras to level up your reading corner:
- Side Table: Use it for drinks, snacks, or notebooks. The C-shaped tables are great for small spaces.
- Fidget Tools: Keep your hands busy without losing focus. I love all the new fidget jewellery, rings are my favorite right now but there are also bracelets and necklaces!
- Bookmark Set: Because dog-earing pages feels chaotic. These magnetic bookmarks are adorable and ADHD-proof (harder to lose!).
- Mini Timer: If you’re trying to build a reading habit, set a timer for 15 or 30 minutes. It helps reduce overwhelm.
Step 7: Make It Yours
Here’s the most important part: personalize your space! Add things that make you feel happy and grounded, whether it’s a soft rug, some fairy lights, or a piece of artwork you love.
When I first set up my reading corner, it was a disaster. I bought a chair that looked great but was too stiff, put it in a spot with bad lighting, and surrounded myself with all the books I “wanted” to read. It was chaotic, and I avoided the space altogether.
Fast forward to now: my corner is small but mighty. I have my cozy chair, a smart lamp that sets the perfect mood, and a basket with my current reads. I even added a small diffuser because I realized lavender calms me down and helps me focus. It’s not just a reading space—it’s my little ADHD-friendly haven.
Setting up a reading corner doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. The key is creating a space that feels comfortable, calming, and functional for your ADHD brain. Start small, tweak as you go, and remember—it’s about what works for you.
